Is Mexico Safe?

Yes.

Tourists used to ask me all the time if New York City is safe.

You mean is it safe to walk down a dark alley in a bad neighborhood at 3 a.m. while wearing your Rolex?

No.

But is it safe to walk in a popular area at a sane hour while using some basic common sense?  Sure!

In fact, Puerto Vallarta is safer than New York City.

I'm reminded of when I was cycling in Indonesia (and there must be a more pretentious way to start a converstation other than, "There I was, cycling in Indonesia,..." but nothing comes to mind just at this moment).

ANYWAY... some locals asked me in broken English where I was from and when I said New York City, they pointed their fingers like guns and said, "New York! Gangsters! Bang bang!"

They meant well, but I knew that no matter what I said, they were never going to believe me that NYC is not a non-stop street gang shootout or Soprano's episode.

I imagine that this is what it's like to be a Mexican, talking to Americans: "Mexico!  Drug cartels!  Bang bang!"

Sigh.

If you're just plain freaked I imagine there's nothing I can say to change your mind. For everyone else, come have a blast with us.
